Softball Falls Short in Series Opener at Morgan State

BALTIMORE, Md. – Coppin State's softball team dropped its MEAC series opener at crosstown rival Morgan State, 2-0 on Saturday afternoon at Lois Murray Field.  The Eagles fell to 19-19 overall and 14-5 in the MEAC while the Bears improved to 29-16 on the year and 17-2 in league play.

CSU managed just two hits on the day, coming on doubles from Xzylia Maravilla and Brooklyn Tapusoa. Maravilla also drew a walk, as did Celeste Gonzales, but the Eagles failed to capitalize on three Morgan State errors.

Vanessa Carrizosa took the loss in the complete game, allowing just two runs on seven hits while striking out a pair.

Morgan's runs came in the third and fourth innings, just before and after a lengthy rain delay.

The Eagles stranded a pair of runners in the first as the Bears committed two errors in the middle infield. Maravilla doubled in the fifth with two outs and Gonzales was left at third in the sixth after a leadoff walk and a groundout by Manaia Fonoti

In the seventh, Tapusoa opened with a double and got to third on a flyout.  Maravilla walked to put the tying run on base before Aniyah Haley flied out to end the game.

Coppin and Morgan will play an 11:00 am doubleheader on Sunday, April 28 to close out the regular season.
