WASHINGTON, D.C. – Coppin State's softball team dropped the rubber game of a three-game MEAC series against league-leading Howard, 10-2 on Sunday afternoon at Washington Nationals Youth Academy. The Eagles (16-15, 11-4 MEAC) are now two games back of the Bison and Morgan State in the conference standings.
Five different players had a base hit for Coppin with
Seryna Esparza and
Brooklyn Tapusoa recording doubles. Tapusoa and
Giselle Ulloa scored a run while
Julianna Mejia and
Xzylia Maravilla drove in runs.
Emily Quintero took the loss, allowing four earned runs on ten hits in over the first 2.0 innings.
Vanessa Carrizosa went the final 2.2 innings, giving up just two earned runs as the Eagles committed five errors.
Howard scored multiple runs in each of the first four innings to take a 9-0 lead. Coppin got on the board with a pair of runs in the fifth as Ulloa, Tapusoa and Mejia had three-straight hits to open the inning. Maravilla drove in Tapusoa later in the frame on a fielder's choice.
The Bison ended the game in the fifth after a leadoff error by the Eagles, followed by a two-out double.
CSU visits Towson on Tuesday, April 16 before hosting Norfolk State for a three-game series on April 20-21.
