WASHINGTON, D.C. – Coppin State's softball team was edged in a midweek non-conference tilt at George Washington University, 2-0, on Wednesday afternoon at the Mount Vernon Athletic Complex. The Eagles fell to 15-13 on the season and GW improved to 19-18.
Vanessa Carrizosa pitched well in the complete game, allowing just two runs on seven hits while striking out one in her 14
th complete game of the season.
Aniyah Haley, Celeste Gonzales, Julianna Mejia and
Xzylia Maravilla all had hits for the Eagles while
Seryna Esparza drew a walk.
GW scored a run in both the first and third innings before Carrizosa blanked the Buff & Blue over the final four innings. Carrizosa got a 1-2-3 fifth and sixth inning for Coppin while facing the minimum in the fourth, getting an inning-ending double play.
CSU threatened in the sixth after Maravilla and Haley recorded back-to-back singles to lead off the frame. Gonzales sacrificed them both over with a bunt but the Eagles were unable to capitalize.
Coppin returns to action on April 13-14 for a three-game MEAC series at Howard, featuring the top two teams in the conference standings. Saturday's doubleheader is set for 4:00 pm on ESPN+, followed by a 3 pm single game on Sunday.
