Women’s Hoops Sends Off Seniors with Rout of South Carolina State on Senior Night

BALTIMORE – Coppin State's women's basketball team sent off its seniors with a 65-33 rout of South Carolina State on Monday night at PEC Arena.  The Eagles improved to 10-17 overall and 7-6 in the MEAC while the Bulldogs fell to 2-26 on the year and 1-12 in league play.

Prior to the game, CSU recognized graduating seniors Faith Blackstone, Charia Roberts and Colleen Bucknor, and both Blackstone and Roberts both played key roles in the victory.  Blackstone finished with 16 points on 6-of-11 shooting with a pair of threes, five rebounds, two assists and two steals.  Roberts chipped in with five points, four rebounds and a steal.

Angel Jones led all scorers with 18 points, hitting 8-of-15 from the field with two threes, four rebounds, three assists and two steals. Laila Lawrence added five points, eight rebounds, a career-high seven steals, two assists and a block.

Coppin also got six points, four steals, three rebounds and two assists from Madyson Burney as well as a pair of threes and eight points from Tiffany Hammond

The Eagles outshot South Carolina State, 40.6% to 30.4%, forced 28 turnovers with 18 steals and turned that into 25 points off turnovers.

How it Happened
  • After a couple early lead changes to start the game, Coppin closed the first period on a 14-5 run, starting with five-straight points from Jones.
  • Blackstone opened the second quarter with a jumper just seconds in, and the Eagles led by as many as 35-18 following a three by Jones with just under a minute left in the half.
  • Jones' three came right after a Blackstone triple, but the Bulldogs hit a three of their own to end the half, cutting CSU's advantage to 35-21.
  • South Carolina State hit a jumper to start the third before a 12-2 Eagles run put the game out of reach.
  • Tyler Gray and Lawrence opened the spurt with back-to-back jumpers, along with a pair of threes by Hammond.
  • Lawrence closed the third quarter with an old-fashioned three-point play and CSU continued to extend its lead throughout the final period.
Up Next: Coppin closes the regular season at crosstown rival Morgan State on Thursday, March 7 at 5:30 pm.
