Baseball Drops NEC Series Opener to Delaware State, 7-3

HANOVER, Md. – Coppin State's baseball team dropped the series opener to Delaware State, 7-3, on Friday afternoon at Joe Cannon Stadium.  The Eagles fell to 3-12 overall and 2-5 in the NEC while the Hornets improved to 4-13 on the year and 3-4 in league play.

Bryce Thompson had one of the team's three hits and drove in a pair of runs while Chris Marte and Kai Holm had the other base hits. Sam Nieves and Angel Colon both drew a pair of walks while Anthony Divittorio and Daniel Moore reached once via a base on balls.

Nico Felber took the loss, allowing five runs on six hits in 6.1 innings before John Neeld gave up just one run on four hits while striking out two over the final 2.2 innings.

Delaware State got on the board first with a three-run home run in the second inning before the Eagles tied it up in their half of the frame. Marte started the rally with a one-out double to left center before Moore and Colon loaded the bases with back-to-back walks.  Thompson then singled to right field, driving in Marte and Moore.  Brody Black then reached on a fielding error, allowing Colon to score and tie the game at three.

Felber retired six of the next eight batters before the Hornets retook the lead with two runs in the sixth. DSU tacked on runs in both the seventh and eighth.

Coppin's best chances to score late came in the seventh and ninth innings when it put two runners on base but came up empty.

The Eagles return to action for a doubleheader against Delaware State at 12 pm on Sunday, March 24.
