HANOVER, Md. – Coppin State's baseball team allowed seven unanswered runs over the final three innings in a 17-16 loss to Mount St. Mary's on Tuesday afternoon at Joe Cannon Stadium.  The Eagles fell to 3-11 while the Mountaineers improved to 3-14-1.

CSU held a 16-10 lead after six innings, but The Mount cut the deficit to just two with a four-run seventh before taking the lead with three runs in the ninth.

Daniel Moore had three of Coppin's 14 hits, scoring twice and driving in another. Anthony Divittorio and Sam Nieves both had two runs and two RBI as Nieves went deep and Divittorio also drew a pair of walks. Jayden Asencio also had a multi-hit game which included a double.

Chris Marte had a three-run home run, drew four walks and scored twice, Damon Gaither scored three runs to go with a double, and Kai Holm had another multi-RBI game with a hit and a walk.

Coppin used six pitchers with Jackson Montgomery having the best outing, giving up no earned runs on one hit in 3.0 innings while striking out three in relief.  Brandon Stephens was charged with eight earned runs over the first three innings before Giovanni Canales allowed the only two batters he faced to reach before being bailed out by Montgomery in the fourth. Liam McCallum gave up three runs while retiring just one batter, Reagan Rivera allowed just one earned run over 2.1 innings before Clay Thompson finished the game, striking out the one batter he faced.

The Eagles walked 13 batters and hit another seven Mountaineers.

The Mount led 1-0 after its first at-bat, but Coppin scored a pair in the bottom half as Nieves went deep just over the fence down the right field line.  Mount St. Mary's came right back with three in the second before Holm drew a bases-loaded walk for the Eagles to make it a 4-3 score after two.

Both teams scored four in the third to keep it a one-run game. Angel Colon had an RBI single before a two-base RBI from Asencio.  Bryce Thompson added a sacrifice fly before Divittorio singled home the final run down the third base line.

After a scoreless fourth, Mount St. Mary's extended its lead to 10-7 in the fifth, but Coppin exploded for nine runs on six hits with a pair of errors to go up six. Gaither was hit by a pitch to start the inning and he advanced to second on a single by Nieves.  Marte then tied the score by crushing a 1-1 pitch over the fence in left center.

Coppin wasn't done, however, as Victor Alongi started another outburst with a single.  Following a walk to Thompson, the Eagles regained the lead on a single to right by Divittorio. Holm added another RBI single and Gaither was hit for the second time of the inning to load the bases. A fielding error by the first baseman on a popup scored two more runs.  A throwing error by the catcher allowed Gaither to score from third and Moore singled home another to give CSU the six-run lead.

The Eagles are scheduled to host Delaware State, weather permitting, for a three-game NEC series on March 22-24.  Friday's game is set for 3 pm, followed by 1 pm on Saturday and 12 pm on Sunday.
