PRINCESS ANNE, Md. – Vanessa Carrizosa allowed just one run in a victory as Coppin State's softball team took the series finale from Maryland Eastern Shore, 7-1 on Sunday afternoon at the Henry Parker Complex. The Eagles improved to 7-9 overall and 2-1 in the MEAC.
A senior from Moreno Valley, Calif., Carrizosa scattered seven hits in her seventh complete game of the season and improved to 4-7. Carrizosa also struck out three and faced the minimum for the final 3.2 innings.
Seryna Esparza connected for her first home run of the season while driving in two runs.
Emily Quintero walked twice and scored twice as well while
Brooklyn Tapusoa went 2-for-3 with two runs, and RBI and a walk.
Juliana Mejia also reached safely two times on the day, going 1-for-3 with a double, an RBI and a walk.
Leslie Sereno also doubled and drove in a run.
Sereno gave Coppin the 1-0 lead with an RBI double in the second, scoring Tapusoa all the way from first with her gapper to left center. Esparza drove in a run on a sacrifice fly in the third while a Hawks throwing error allowed another run to score in the inning.
UMES got on the board in the fourth with a run on two hits, but Esparza got the run back with a solo home run over the fence in right.
Carrizosa got out of the fifth and sixth with double play balls and got a 1-2-3 seventh inning to give Coppin the series victory.
