Baseball Strands 12 Runners in Game Three Loss at Wagner

STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. – Coppin State's baseball team dropped its NEC series finale at Wagner, 17-3 on Sunday afternoon at SIUH Community Park.  The Eagles fell to 3-10 overall and 2-4 in the Northeast Conference while the Seahawks improved to 7-12 with a perfect 6-0 mark in league play.

Led by Kai Holm with three hits, and another two from Sam Nieves, Coppin recorded ten base hits but left 12 runners on base. Anthony Divittorio had two RBI while Damon Gaither had the other with a double, the team's only extra-base hit.

Kaden Straily allowed three earned runs on six hits over the first 4.1 innings while Jaedin Hurd, Christian Pareja and Jackson Montgomery gave up a combined 11 earned runs over the next 1.2 innings. Giovanni Canales and Justin Ritz threw scoreless seventh and eighth innings.

Gaither put Coppin ahead, 1-0 with a double down the left field line, driving in Holm all the way from first after his one-out single.

Straily pitched a scoreless first before Wagner tied it up in the second. He faced the minimum in the fourth, getting a 6-4-3 double play after a leadoff walk, but the Seahawks scored three in the fifth before he was relieved by Hurd.

Hurd allowed just a walk to finish the inning, but Wagner erupted for nine runs in the sixth and got another four in the seventh.

Coppin had runners on base each inning, stranding a pair in the second and seventh innings before Divittorio broke through in the eighth with a two-run single.  Scoring on the play was Nieves and Daniel Moore who reached on a pair of singles. Gabe Breckenridge followed Divittorio with a single to load the bases before a popout ended the inning.

Coppin hosts Mount St. Mary's in a 3 pm start on Tuesday, March 19, before welcoming Delaware State for a three-game series on March 22-24.
