ORANGEBURG, S.C. – Angel Jones led all players with 17 points and
Laila Lawrence reached 1,000 career points with another double-double, leading the Coppin State women's basketball team to a 63-39 victory at South Carolina State on Monday night at S-H-M Memorial Center. The Eagles improved to 8-13 overall and 5-2 in the MEAC while the Bulldogs fell to 1-21 on the year and 0-7 in league play.
A sophomore from Alexandria, Va., Jones hit 7-of-15 from the floor with three 3-pointers while adding seven rebounds on the night. Lawrence was the only other CSU player in double figures, recording 11 points and 14 rebounds with three steals for her league-leading tenth double-double of the season.
Lawrence's 1,000
th point came on a layup with 5:18 remaining in the fourth quarter, putting the Eagles on top, 55-36. Needing just seven points to reach the milestone entering the night, Lawrence now has 1,004 points after two seasons at Texas A&M-Commerce and 21 games with CSU.
Freshman
Niyah Gaston hit three 3-pointers for nine points, followed by
Mossi Staples with eight points, seven assists, four rebounds and two steals.
Madyson Burney hit all four of her free throws and finished with six points while
Tiffany Hammond and
Tyler Gray chipped in with five points apiece.
Coppin outshot South Carolina State, 37.1% to 31.1% and outrebounded the Bulldogs, 41-34. The Eagles also made nine 3-pointers and forced the hosts into 23 turnovers.
How it Happened
- After falling behind early in the game at, 7-5, Coppin scored ten-straight points with Jones accounting for half to put the Eagles up, 15-7 with 2:51 left in the first quarter.
- The teams traded baskets to end the period and to start the second, but Coppin pulled away with a 15-0 run, starting with five-straight points by Staples.
- Gaston then hit back-to-back threes before a pair of free throws by Burney and a jumper by Jones.
- South Carolina State got back on the board with a triple just before the half, but Coppin led by a wide 36-19 margin.
- Both teams scored 12 points in the third, but CSU nearly doubled the Bulldogs in the fourth to extend the lead.
- Staples opened the fourth quarter with a three before feeding Lawrence for a jumper, giving her 999 points.
- Lawrence hit a layup nearly two minutes later for 1,000 and 1,001 career points, and she added a free throw and another field goal off a pass by Staples at the 2:40 mark.
