HANOVER, Md. – Coppin State's baseball team got a pair of hits from
Chris Marte and
Kai Holm and 3.2 scoreless innings of relief from
Jackson Montgomery in a 6-4 loss to Saint Peter's on Saturday afternoon at Joe Cannon Stadium. The Eagles fell to 0-5 on the year while the Peacocks moved to 2-4.
Marte finished 2-for-4 with a pair of doubles, a run scored and an RBI while Holm also doubled for one of his two hits and scored a run.
Damon Gaither had the only other hit for Coppin as
Anthony Divittorio and
Daniel Moore drew three walks apiece with an RBI.
Five Eagles were also hit by a pitch, including
Angel Colon twice and he scored twice as well.
Montgomery relieved starter
Alec Elges with one out in the fifth and went the next 3.2 innings, giving up just four hits while striking out four.
Kaden Straily tossed the final inning without giving up a run. Elges took the loss, giving up six runs in 4.1 innings while striking out four.
The Eagles scored twice in the second on back-to-back bases-loaded walks issued to Moore and Divittorio. Marte got the offense started with a two-out double off the wall in left center and Colon was plunked on the very next pitch before three-straight walks.
Saint Peter's came back with four-straight runs to take its first lead of the game and they added another in both the fourth and fifth innings.
Brody Black got one of the runs back in the bottom of the fourth with an RBI fielder's choice, but the Peacocks led 6-3 after the fifth.
Montgomery faced the minimum in the seventh and the Navy & Gold cut the deficit to just two runs on back-to-back doubles by Holm and Marte.
CSU put runners on in both the eighth and ninth but were unable to capitalize.
The same two teams will close out the three-game series at 1:00 pm on Sunday, February 25 at Joe Cannon Stadium.
