GREENSBORO, N.C. – Coppin State's softball team was unable to overcome a five-run deficit as the Eagles fell at North Carolina A&T, 8-2 on Friday afternoon at LASC. With the loss, Coppin falls to 3-2 while the Aggies moved to 3-7.
Celeste Gonzales and
Aniyah Haley both had RBI singles while Gonzales also drew a walk.
Xzylia Maravilla also went 1-for-1 with a run and two walks.
In the circle,
Vanessa Carrizosa gave up seven runs in 5.0 innings while striking out five before
Emily Quintero pitched the final inning for the Eagles, giving up a run on a couple hits.
Carrizosa struck out three in the first innings to keep the game scoreless before the Aggies plated a couple runs in the third. North Carolina A&T added three more in the fourth to take a 5-0 lead.
Coppin went on a two-rally in the fifth, starting with a single by Maravilla before
Avianna Peterson drew a walk. Maravilla scored as Gonzales singled down the left field line, and Peterson touched home on a single to center field by Haley.
The Aggies got one of the runs back on a sacrifice fly in the fifth and pulled away with two runs in the sixth with Quintero relieving Carrizosa after a leadoff single.
Maravilla and Gonzales reached base via walks in the seventh but were unable to score.
A doubleheader between the two teams will be played on Saturday, February 24, starting at 12:00 pm. Both games will be streamed on FloSports.
