Box Score FAIRFAX, Va. – Damon Gaither had two of the team's six base hits, including his second home run of the season as the Coppin State baseball team fell at George Mason, 21-2 on Tuesday afternoon at Spuhler Field. The Eagles fell to 0-3 on the year while the Patriots moved to 1-3.
A junior from Olympia, Wash., Gaither went 2-for-4 with a run and an RBI while
Brody Black also had a pair of hits and drew a walk to lead the offense.
Ethan Acevedo and
Kai Holm also recorded base hits as
Bryce Thompson,
Sam Nieves and Acevedo all drew walks.
Kaden Straily gave up six runs over the first 2.0 innings, followed by
Michael Matthews (0.2 innings),
Jaedin Hurd (1.1 innings),
Justin Ritz (1.2 innings),
Jackson Montgomery (1.1 innings) and
Reagan Rivera (1.0 innings). Montgomery did not allow a run in his outing and struck out three and Ritz fanned a pair.
Straily held the Patriots scoreless in the first inning but four runs came across for George Mason in the second. GMU scored 12 in the third, added another in the fourth and two in both the sixth and eighth innings.
Coppin got on the scoreboard with a run in the seventh as Nieves scored from third on a balk. He got into scoring position after getting to second on an error before advancing 90 feet on a passed ball. Gaither then led off the eighth with a home run after Montgomery struck out two batters in the Mason half of the seventh.
The Eagles will host Saint Peter's in a three-game series on February 23-25 with Friday's game set for 2 pm, followed by 1 pm starts on both Saturday and Sunday.
