Laila Lawrence posted another double-double as Coppin State's women's basketball team fell at Maryland Eastern Shore, 73-51 on Monday night at the Hytche Center. The Eagles dropped to 9-14 overall and 6-3 in the MEAC while the Hawks improved to 11-12 on the year and evened their conference at 4-4.
Blackstone hit 4-of-10 from the field, including a 3-pointer while hitting 7-of-10 from the line to lead all players in scoring. Lawrence finished with ten points and ten rebounds to go with a pair of blocks and
Mossi Staples was also in double figures with 12 points.
Coppin shot just 28.6% from the floor and hit 18-of-31 from the line with the Hawks hitting 48.3% of their shots after going 17-of-30 (56.7%) in the first half.
How it Happened
- Staples opened the game with a quick three following a UMES turnover which the Hawks answered with a jumper .
- Lawrence hit a layup with Blackstone hitting a pair of free throws to give the Eagles a 7-2 lead, but the hosts went on a 16-4 run to close the period.
- The Hawks outscored Coppin, 18-11, in the opening quarter after shooting over 53% from the field, but the Eagles hit a pair of threes along with three free throws in the quarter.
- UMES opened the second quarter with a three which Lawrence answered before a 10-0 Hawks run extended their lead to 31-13 with 5:41 left in the half.
- Blackstone hit a three just before halftime, but UMES led 42-21 at the break and CSU got no closer than 13 points in the second half.
