BALTIMORE – Laila Lawrence notched another double-double with a game-high 22 points and 13 rebounds, leading the Coppin State women's basketball team to a 63-58 victory over Howard on Monday night at PEC Arena. The Eagles improved to 7-12 on the season and remain atop the MEAC standings with a 4-1 record in league play.
A junior from Lewisville, Texas. Lawrence hit 9-of-11 from the floor and made all four of her free throws. Lawrence also blocked four shots and added a pair of steals.
 
Coppin outshot Howard, 41.8% to 37.5% for the game, outscoring the Bison, 37-27 in the second half.
How it Happened
	- - Howard opened an eight-point lead midway through first quarter at 15-7, but Coppin bounced back with five-straight points from Lawrence, including an old-fashioned three-point play.
- The Bison hit a midrange jumper just before the end of the period to take a five-point lead, and the teams played even in the second quarter with Howard leading 31-26.
- Howard maintained the advantage for most of the third, but Blackstone and Hammond hit back-to-back threes to tie the score at 41 with just under a minute remaining.
- Following a miss by the Bison, Jones put back a miss by Staples at the buzzer, giving CSU a 43-41 lead going into the fourth.
- Lawrence opened the fourth quarter with another And-1, giving the Eagles their largest lead with 9:46 remaining in regulation.
- The Bison answered with seven-straight points to retake the lead and the game saw three lead changes and two ties over the final eight-plus minutes.
- A jumper by Howard's Kaiya Creek tied the score at 58 with just over two minutes remaining before Tyler Gray found Lawrence inside for a jumper with 1:36 left to play.
- Lawrence came right back with a block at the other end and Gray came down with a big rebound, forcing Howard to foul.
- Staples hit a free throw with two seconds left to make it a three-point game, and following a Bison timeout, their last-second three-point attempt fell short.
