BALTIMORE – Coppin State's softball team dropped a pair of MEAC games to Maryland Eastern Shore on Friday afternoon at CSU Complex. After dropping the opener, 8-1, the Eagles (4-21, 1-9 MEAC) were edged, 5-3 in the nightcap.
Game 1: Maryland Eastern Shore def. Coppin State, 8-1
Seryna Esparza went 2-for-3 with and RBI while
Brissa Alvarado and
Manaia Fonoti each recorded doubles. Alvarado was also hit by a pitch, reaching safely twice in the game.
Vanessa Carrizosa took the loss, allowing seven runs on nine hits with three strikeouts in 5.0 innings.
Isabel Tobias finished the game, giving up just one run on one hit in 2.0 innings.
The Hawks got out to a quick 4-0 lead, starting the game with four-straight base hits, a sac bunt another base hit to score the first three runs. After a walk, and a sacrifice fly, they scored their fourth run.
UMES tacked on another run in the second, and it remained a 5-0 score until they added two more in the fifth and another in the sixth to extend its lead to eight runs.
Coppin extended the game in the sixth as Esparza drove in Alvarado with a sharp single through the right side to make it an 8-1 deficit.
Tobias pitched a 1-2-3 seventh for the Eagles, but the Eagles were unable to rally in their final at-bat.

Seryna Esparza had another two hits, including a double while
Xzylia Maravilla went 1-for-2 with two RBI, a double and a walk.
Brissa Alvarado also added a base hit and a walk
Vanessa Carrizosa went the distance while taking the loss, allowing just two earned runs on eight hits while striking out three.
Once again, UMES struck early with a run in the first, but
Celeste Gonzales recorded a sacrifice fly in the bottom half of the inning to tie the score. Alvarado scored on the long fly ball, after a lead leadoff walk and back-to-back hits from
Manaia Fonoti and Esparza.
Both teams went scoreless in the second before the Hawks scored three runs in the third and another run in the fifth to take a 5-1 lead.
Coppin scored a pair of runs in the sixth, coming on a two-run double to right field which scored Esparza and Gonzales.
After holding UMES scoreless in the top of the seventh, Alvarado led off the seventh with a single but did not advance further.
