Baseball Falls to Maryland Eastern Shore, 5-1 in Game Two of Series

SALISBURY, Md. – Brett Curran recorded three hits and Angel Colon added a pair, but the Coppin State baseball team dropped its second-straight game at Maryland Eastern Shore, 5-1 on Friday night at Henry Parker Athletic Complex.  The Eagles now stand at 11-19 overall and 4-7 in the NEC while the Hawks move to 8-21 with a 6-8 mark in league play.

Curran finished 3-for-4 while Colon went 2-for-4 with team's only run on the day. All eight of Coppin's base hits went for singles.

Marcos Herrand took the loss, allowing four earned runs on six hits while striking out a career-high eight batters in 6.0 innings. Tim Ruffino gave up just two hits in the final 2.0 innings.

Coppin came up empty in the first despite a leadoff single from Curran to start the game, and Maryland Eastern Shore capitalized with a run in its half of the inning. The Hawks got two more in the second to take a 3-0 lead before the Eagles got on the board in the third on an RBI single from Jordan Hamberg.

Herrand got a 1-2-3 third and fourth inning before freezing the first two batters of the fifth and retiring the side after plunking a Hawk.

A CSU error allowed two runs to score in the sixth to make the score 5-1 in favor of UMES.

The Eagles threatened in the eighth, getting back-to-back singles from Curran and Brody Black to start the frame, but the next three players went down in order. Colon recorded a two-out single in the ninth before being left stranded.

The series finale between the longtime rivals is set for 1:00 pm on Saturday, April 8.
