Softball Falls Just Short in 4-3 Loss to Saint Peter’s

BALTIMORE – Coppin State's softball team's rally against Saint Peter's fell just short in a 4-3 loss on Wednesday afternoon at CSU Softball Complex.  The Eagles fall to 4-19 on the year while the Peacocks improve to 17-9.

Trailing, 4-0, after the top of the fifth, Coppin cut the deficit to three on an RBI by Ava Camarena. Camarena reached safely on the fielder's choice, as did Dillon Morgan to third and Brooklyn Tapusoa, with no outs.  The potential big inning came to a halt on a lineout that went for a double play and Saint Peter's got the final out on the very next pitch.

Isabel Tobias, who threw her second complete game of the season, got a 1-2-3 sixth inning for the Eagles, and Coppin capitalized with a run in the bottom half on a sac bunt by Vanessa Carrizosa.

Saint Peter's got back-to-back singles in the seventh, but Tobias settled, striking out the next batter before getting a pair of flyouts to keep the deficit at just two.

Tapusoa started the seventh with a walk and got to second on a one-out single from Brissa Alvarado.  A wild pitch advanced both into scoring position, and following a walk issued to Aniyah Haley, Celeste Gonzales hit a sacrifice fly to right field, to make it a 4-3 score.

Phaedra Smith, who replaced Alvarado as a pinch runner, advanced to third on the flyout, as did Haley to second, but the following batter was retired, allowing the Peacocks to escape.

Five different Eagles collected base hits on the afternoon with Haley and Tapusoa reaching safely twice. Tobias allowed just three earned runs on nine hits while striking out four and walking none.

The Eagles host Maryland Eastern Shore in a three-game MEAC series on April 7-8.  A doubleheader will be played on Friday at 1 pm, followed by a 12 pm single game on Saturday.
