ANNAPOLIS, Md. – Liam McCallum had four base hits and
Giovanni Canales tossed four relief innings to pick up the win as Coppin State's baseball team defeated Navy, 7-6 on Wednesday afternoon at Max Bishop Stadium. With its third victory over Navy in the last four meetings, the Eagles improve to 11-17 on the season while the Midshipmen fall to 14-16.
McCallum finished 4-for-5 with a double, a run scored, an RBI and a walk while
Brett Curran,
Josh Hankins and
Angel Colon all had multi-hit games.
Brody Black drove in a pair of runs while going 1-for-2 with a run scored, two steals and three walks.
Canales relieved
Christian Pareja and allowed just one run on four hits in the final 4.0 innings. Pareja pitched well in the no-decision, giving up just one earned run in 5.0 innings while striking out four.
With the score tied at 6-6 going into the ninth, Coppin recorded three base hits, including the game-winning single to left center by Curran with one out, driving in Colon who had singled to start the frame before advancing on a passed ball.
Canales retired the first Midshipmen to start the ninth, before a pinch-hitter reached on an error. On the very next pitch, Navy lined a shot to
Brian Nicolas at third who doubled up the runner unassisted to clinch the victory for CSU.
Coppin got out to a 3-0 lead with two runs in the first, on an RBI from Black before McCallum scored in a wild pitch, followed by an RBI double from McCallum in the second.
Navy responded with four runs, all unearned in its half of the second, before
Nathan Burdette tied the score with a sacrifice fly in the third, scoring Nicolas who led off with a single before reaching getting to third on a double from Colon.
Black gave Coppin back the lead in the fourth with a single down the right field line, driving in
Jordan Hamberg from second before the Mids tied it at 5-5 in the bottom half.
An RBI double from Hankins in the sixth, once again gave the Eagles back the lead at 6-5 before Navy tied in the seventh. Both teams went scoreless in the eighth before Coppin won it in its final at-bat.
The Eagles open a three-game NEC series at Maryland Eastern Shore at 1 pm on Thursday, April 6. A 3 pm first pitch will follow on Friday, followed by a 1 pm start on Saturday.
