HANOVER, Md. – Marcos Herrand gave up just one run and the Eagles got contributions from everyone in the lineup as Coppin State's baseball team routed Sacred Heart, 13-1 on Saturday afternoon at Joe Cannon Stadium. The Eagles now stand at 14-28 overall and 7-14 in the Northeast Conference while the Pioneers fall to 18-23 and 13-11 in league play.
A sophomore from Brandon, Fla., and the reigning NEC Co-Pitcher of the Week, Herrand improved to 5-5 on the year, giving up just one run on two hits while striking out five in 7.0 innings. Herrand forced 11 groundouts and got better as the game wore on, retiring 13 of the last 15 hitters with a pair of strikeouts in the fifth and seventh innings.
Jordan Hamberg drove in four runs with a three-run home run and a single, going 2-for-5 with a pair of runs and a walk.
Liam McCallum had a team-high three hits as Coppin drew a season-high 12 walks on the day.
Bryce Thompson scored three runs, followed by
Brett Curran and
Mike Dorcean who both scored twice.
Brody Black and
Josh Hankins each drove in two runs while Black also had a pair of hits, including a double.
Herrand got a 1-2-3 first inning and Coppin quickly gave him the lead as Dorcean beat out an infield single, driving in Hamberg who walked and got to third on a single from McCallum.
Sacred Heart tied it up in the second, but Coppin erupted for eight runs in its half of the inning despite recording just two hits. The Eagles took advantage of an error, five walks and two hit batsmen in the frame. Hankins got the scoring started with a sacrifice fly before Hamberg went opposite field for a three-run home run. Following a single and two walks, Thompson was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded, before back-to-back wild pitches scored two more. After a pitching change,
Brian Nicolas stole second, and the throw was wild which allowed Thompson to score from third.
Both teams went scoreless in the third before Black drove in a pair of runs in the fourth with a double to left, scoring Dorcean and Thompson.
Hamberg drove in another run for the Eagles in the seventh, as did Hankins in the eighth, both with singles to right.
Coppin will be on the road for the next seven games, starting with a three-game NEC series at Long Island University on May 5-7.
