CATONSVILLE, Md. – Coppin State's baseball team was unable to hang on to a one-run lead as it fell at UMBC, 6-5 on Wednesday night at Alumni Field. The Eagles now stand at 13-26 overall while the Retrievers improve to 20-18.
Clay Thompson threw 5.0 scoreless innings while allowing just three hits and
Corey Miley gave him an early 1-0 lead with an RBI single in the first, driving in
Josh Hankins who had doubled earlier in the frame.
At one point, Thompson retired seven-straight Retrievers, but Coppin was able to add any insurance runs, stranding eight runners while Thompson was on the hill.
UMBC scored four runs in the sixth, but Coppin matched it with four runs in the top of the seventh as Miley,
Brody Black, Mike Dorcean and
Sam Nieves were credited with RBI. Hankins started the inning with his second double of the game before scoring on Miley's groundout. The Eagles took advantage of a pair of walks and a pair of errors to retake a 5-4 lead.
The Retrievers scored twice in their half of the seventh before
John Neeld relieved
Juan Pablo Hernandez and retired the final two batters. Coppin stranded two more runners in both the eighth and ninth innings, all coming on walks.
Hankins had two of CSU's five base hits on the night as the Eagles drew 12 walks and left 15 runners on base.
Coppin hosts Sacred Heart in a 3:30 pm doubleheader on Thursday, April 27 at Joe Cannon Stadium before playing a single game at 1 pm on Friday, April 28.
