HANOVER, Md. – Coppin State's baseball team dropped the final game of its three-game series against Stonehill College, 4-1, on Sunday afternoon at Joe Cannon Stadium. The Eagles now stand at 12-23 overall and 5-10 in the Northeast Conference.
Josh Hankins had two of the team's three base hits, which included a double, while
Sebastien Sarabia added the other.
Tyler Nichol received the loss as he gave up just two runs on three hits in 4.0 innings while striking out four.
Giovanni Canales went the next 3.2 innings without allowing an earned run while
Tim Ruffino struck out three batters in the final 1.1 innings, giving up just one hit.
Hankins put Coppin on the board with an RBI single in the first, driving in
Brett Curran who drew a walk to start the game. He got to third after
Brody Black was hit by a pitch and a groundout from Sarabia.
Stonehill tied the score with a run in the second before taking a 2-1 lead in the fourth. Hankins started the bottom of the fourth with a double before
Angel Colon drew a walk, but he was thrown out at third on a failed sacrifice bunt attempt.
Canales faced the minimum in the fifth and held the Skyhawks scoreless until the eighth when an error helped Stonehill score a pair of runs.
Ruffino got the final two outs of the frame, which included a strikeout to end the inning, before throwing a 1-2-3 ninth with a pair of punchouts to end it.
Sarabia started the ninth with a single and got into scoring position as Hankins drew a walk. With the tying run now at the plate, the Eagles grounded into a 6-4-3 double play before a strikeout ended the game.
