HANOVER, Md. – Coppin State's baseball team allowed seven runs over the final two innings in a 11-6 loss to Stonehill College on Friday afternoon at Joe Cannon Stadium. The loss drops the Eagles to 11-22 overall and 4-9 in the NEC.
Brody Black went 3-for-4 with a walk and a run scored and
Sebastien Sarabia drove in a pair of runs with two hits as every Eagles starter got at least one base hit.
Liam McCallum and
Brian Nicolas also had a base hit and a walk apiece with Nicolas recording an RBI triple for the team's only extra-base hit.
Marcos Herrand gave up six runs on nine hits over 7.1 innings while striking out four in the no-decision.
Rashad Ruff was charged with four earned runs over the final 1.2 innings for the loss.
The Eagles rallied from a 4-0 deficit, tying the score with a four-run fifth inning with six base hits.
Josh Hankins and
Angel Colon started the frame with back-to-back singles before
Mike Dorcean drove in Hankins with a sacrifice fly. Nicolas followed with an RBI triple to the gap in left center before
Brett Curran laid down a bunt single to score Nicolas, cutting the deficit to a single run.
Black then singled and both runners advanced into scoring position before Stonehill made a pitching change with a 2-1 count on McCallum. McCallum drew a walk to load the bases before Sarabia tied the score with a bunt single. Unfortunately, the big inning stalled on a double play.
Herrand got a 1-2-3 sixth and seventh inning and the Eagles gave him the lead with a two-run seventh on RBI from McCallum and Sarabia.
Stonehill started the eighth with a walk and a double, followed by a sacrifice fly to pull within one before Coppin brought in Ruff with one out. A double tied the score and the Skyhawks added two more runs to take an 8-6 lead.
The Skyhawks added three more runs in the ninth and Coppin only got a leadoff walk from Nicolas in the bottom half before the side was retired.
Coppin and Stonehill meet for game two of a three-game series on Saturday, April 15 at 1 pm.
