Baseball Drops NEC Series Opener to Fairleigh Dickinson, 14-7

HANOVER, Md. – Coppin State's baseball team fell to Fairleigh Dickinson, 14-7 in their NEC series opener on Saturday afternoon at Joe Cannon Stadium.  The Eagles fall to 6-15 on the season and 3-4 in league play while the Knights improve to 11-8-1 overall and 4-3 in league play.

Brody Black went 3-for-5 with a triple and two runs scored while Jordan Hamberg had a multi-hit game along with a double and an RBI. Mike Dorcean was walked three times and tied the school-record by being hit by his 29th career pitch. Sebastien Sarabia also had a pair of hits and a walk.

Liam McCallum took the loss, giving up eight earned runs while striking out four in the first 4.0 innings.  Giovanni Canales had his longest outing of the season, going the final 5.0 innings while giving up three earned runs and striking out three.

Fairleigh Dickinson got out to an early lead with three runs in the first, the last of which was unearned. Coppin came right back to score one in the bottom half of the inning as Black scored after he and Hamberg had back-to-back singles and advanced on a pair of wild pitches.

The Knights got the run back in the second, but McCallum got a 1-2-3 third before FDU put six runs across in the fourth on four hits and an error to take a 10-1 lead.

Josh Hankins drove in a run in the fourth with a groundout and Dorcean later scored on a wild pitch to cut the deficit.

Four runs scored for the Knights in the fifth and the score remained the same until the seventh on a RBI groundout from Hamberg.

Coppin's last-inning rally fell short as it tacked on a pair of runs on three hits. Hamberg opened the frame with an opposite field double before getting to third on a Sarabia single. Noah Murciano, who replaced Dorcean behind the plate, was credited with an RBI on a groundout, and pinch runner Bruce Hilton scored on a pinch-hit single to left by Anthony Divittorio.

The same two teams will meet in a 11:00 am doubleheader on Sunday, March 26 at Joe Cannon Stadium.
