WASHINGTON, D.C. – Coppin State's baseball team fell at Georgetown University, 10-0 on Wednesday afternoon at Washington National Youth Academy. The Eagles now stand at 3-13 overall while the Hoyas move to 11-6.
CSU managed just three hits on the day, coming from
Liam McCallum,
Brian Nicolas and
Mike Dorcean. Nicolas and Dorcean also drew a walk to reach base safely twice.
Giovanni Canales took the loss, allowing six runs over the first 3.0 innings.
Tim Ruffino,
Tyler Nichol and
Christian Pareja all threw scoreless innings of relief before
Clay Thompson gave up four runs while striking out two.
Rashad Ruff finished the game, allowing just one hit and a walk while three of his four outs recorded were strikeouts.
Georgetown took the early lead with a leadoff home run in the first inning, and the Hoyas tacked on three more runs to take a 4-0 lead.
Coppin got singles from McCallum and Nicolas in the second, but both were left stranded, and Georgetown capitalized by scoring two more in the second.
Canales got a 1-2-3 third inning, his last inning of work before being replaced by Ruffino who retired the side in order in the fourth. After a leadoff walk in the fifth, Nichol got the next three batters out, and Pareja issued just a walk in the sixth.
Four Hoyas came around to score in the seventh before Ruff fanned the final batter of the inning. Ruff also struck out the first two in the eighth before getting a flyout to end the inning.
Coppin heads to Merrimack College in North Andover, Mass., for a three-game NEC series on March 17-19. Friday's game is scheduled for 3 pm, followed by 2 pm on Saturday and 12 pm on Sunday.
