Softball Falls to Saint Joseph’s at James Madison Invitational

HARRISONBURG, Va. – A rough first inning was the difference as Coppin State's softball team fell to Saint Joseph's, 7-1 at James Madison University's LD&B Insurance Invitational on Saturday afternoon.  The Eagles fall to 2-7 on the season while the Hawks improve to 7-11.

Saint Joseph's scored six runs in the first inning, but Vanessa Carrizosa settled down in the circle, giving up just one run on four hits the rest of the way.

Coppin left three runners on base the first two innings but broke through in the third, after SJU tacked on another in the top half, on an RBI single by Aniyah HaleyBrissa Alvarado scored on the play while Seryna Esparza was thrown at home for the final out on the same play. Alvarado and Esparza had back-to-back singles to start the frame.

Carrizosa threw a 1-2-3 fourth inning and allowed just one hit in the fifth before Coppin threatened again in the sixth. Flowing a leadoff walk by Manaia Fonoti, Carrizosa also drew a walk before an error loaded the bases with one out. Unfortunately, the Hawks got through the inning as Alvarado's line drive was caught by the second baseman.

SJU went down in order once again in the seventh, but the Eagles failed to capitalize in their final at-bat with Esparza and Fonoti left on base following walks.

Carrizosa went 2-for-2 at the plate along with a walk while taking the loss in the complete game. Esparza also reached safely three times, recording a hit with a pair of walks while Fonoti reached three times via a free pass.

Coppin closes out the weekend on Sunday, February 12 with Fairleigh Dickinson at 12 p, followed by Radford at 2:30 pm.
