HANOVER, Md. – Coppin State's baseball dropped a pair of games to Wagner College to open Northeast Conference (NEC) play on Saturday afternoon at Joe Cannon Stadium. The Eagles now stand at 3-11 on the season while the Seahawks improve to 7-6 after winning the opener, 8-0, and the nightcap, 8-3.
Game 1
Wagner got out to a quick start in the opener as its first two hitters recorded a single and a wind-aided two-run home run to lead 2-0. The Seahawks got three more runs in the first inning, all of which were unearned thanks to three CSU errors and a passed ball.
Liam McCallum settled down after the first inning as he did not allow another earned run in the next six innings. He took the loss despite allowing just two earned runs on five hits while striking out eight in 7.0 innings.
Unfortunately, McCallum did not get any run support as the Eagles left 11 runners stranded on base. Six different players recorded a hit for Coppin, including
Mike Dorcean and
Sebastien Sarabia who also drew a pair of walks each.
Coppin twice left the bases loaded (third and seventh innings) and stranded a pair of runners in both the fifth and sixth innings. The Eagles grounded into three double plays and committed six errors.
Clay Thompson pitched the final two innings and did not allow an earned run.
Game 2
The Seahawks put a four-spot on the board in the top of the first inning, but Coppin got one of the runs back in its half of the frame with an RBI single from
Sam Nieves.
Brett Curran scored on the play after starting the game with a walk before advancing to second on
Jordan Hamberg's free pass.
Starting pitcher
Marcos Herrand threw a 1-2-3 second before giving up three in the third as Wagner increased its advantage to 7-1. Herrand and
Giovanni Canales held the Seahawks scoreless the next five innings, allowing Coppin to stay in the game.
Josh Hankins recorded an RBI single in the fourth, driving in
Brian Nicolas, before Sarabia plated Curran in the fifth with a fielder's choice.
Herrand retired the final four batters he faced which included a double play to end the fifth before Canales relieved him in the seventh. Canales retired the side in order in the seventh and allowed just one hit in the eighth before giving up a run while fanning two in the ninth.
Curran doubled with one out in the ninth but was thrown out at third trying to extend the hit into a triple.
Corey Miley had two of Coppin's seven base hits while Curran went 1-for-3 with two runs and two walks. Hamberg drew three walks and was hit by a pitch in four plate appearances.
Herrand was charged with seven runs on ten hits while striking out four in 6.0 innings. Canales finished the game, allowing just one run on three hits while striking out four in 3.0 innings
