CORVALLIS, Ore. – Coppin State's baseball team matched 19
th-ranked Oregon State with eight base hits but walks proved costly in a 11-1 loss to the Beavers on Friday night at Goss Stadium. The Eagles fall to 3-2 on the season while OSU improves to 4-1 overall.
Corey Miley and
Brody Black each had a pair of hits with Miley connecting for the team's only base hit of the night. Black also drew a walk and scored the team's only run as he reached base safely three times.
Sebastien Sarabia had a base hit and a walk while
Brian Nicolas and drove in Black with a sacrifice fly for the team's lone run.
Liam McCallum took the loss and was charged with just four earned runs on four hits over 4.0 innings while striking out two before giving way to
Tim Ruffino with two runners on. Ruffino also gave up four runs over the next two innings before
Tyler Nichol tossed the final two innings, allowing just one run on one hit while matching McCallum with a pair of strikeouts.
OSU scored two quick runs off McCallum in the first with a solo home run and a double before McCallum settled down to throw a scoreless second. Miley had doubled for Coppin in the top half of the frame after Nicolas drew a walk but both were left stranded.
An error proved costly in the third for Coppin as a possible runner on third, two-out situation became a bases-loaded, nobody out jam. The Beavers made the Eagles pay with two more runs, extending their lead to 4-0.
McCallum got out of the fourth without any damage but walked the first two batters of the fifth before being relieved. OSU scored three in the fifth and sixth innings before Nichol threw a scoreless seventh.
Coppin threatened in each of the final four innings. In the sixth,
Jordan Hamberg and Sarabia recorded back-to-back hits before a 4-3 double play ended the frame. Miley and
Angel Colon also had base hits in the seventh before being left stranded. After getting on the board in the eighth,
Mike Dorcean and Black got base hits once again as the Eagles left 11 runners on base.
CSU pitchers gave up 13 walks in the game.
