NORFOLK, Va. – After leading at the half, Coppin State's women's basketball team shot just 19.0% from the floor in the second half as the Eagles fell, 47-36 at Norfolk State on Monday night at Echols Hall. The loss drops Coppin to 6-19 overall and 3-7 in the MEAC while the Spartans improve to 21-5 on the year and 9-2 in league play.
Inside the Numbers
- Jewel Watkins led all players with ten points with three 3-pointers and was followed by Hope Evans with nine points and Colleen Bucknor with seven. Evans also tallied seven rebounds and a pair of assists while Bucknor pulled down six rebounds and both blocked a shot.
- Khya Jenkins chipped in with four points while grabbing a career and game-high 11 rebounds.
- Mossi Staples, Jalynda Salley and Nadjy Amira had just two points each with Salley recording eight rebounds and Amira blocked three shots.
- Coppin outrebounded Norfolk State, 39-33, but turned the ball over 26 times which turned into 17 extra shot attempts and 21 points off turnovers for the Spartans.
- Kierra Wheeler led NSU with nine points while four others recorded seven points apiece.
How it Happened
- Coppin scored the first four points of the game, coming on a layup by Bucknor and a pair of free throws by Staples.
- Wheeler put Norfolk on the board with a layup at the 7:33 mark before Bucknor and Jenkins dropped in buckets to make it an 8-2 lead.
- The Spartans put together seven-straight points to take their first lead of the game and held a 12-11 advantage after the first.
- Watkins buried a three to open the second quarter, but NSU responded with four-straight before Evans hit a triple, putting Coppin on top, 17-16.
- NSU answered with six-straight points to regain and extended its advantage to 22-17 before Coppin closed the half with seven-straight points, finishing with a three by Watkins to make it 24-22 at the half.
- Watkins gave CSU a 27-22 lead to open the second half, and Evans answered a NSU three with one of her own, but Coppin went without a field goal until the 5:54 mark of the fourth quarter, allowing Norfolk to go up, 38-33.
- After Jenkins stopped the drought with a bucket with just under six minutes left in regulation, NSU hit a three, followed by a layup from Salley, but Coppin got just one point the rest of the way.
