BALTIMORE – Coppin State's women's basketball team welcomed their alumni home with an impressive 52-41 victory over Howard for Homecoming on Saturday afternoon at PEC Arena. The Eagles advance to 3-6 in conference play, while Howard bumped down to 7-3.
Inside the Numbers
· Mossi Staples led the team across the board with 13 points, four assists and two steals.
· Colleen Bucknor finished with a game high 13 rebounds, just one off her career-high, while finishing second on the team with nine points.
· Hope Evans recorded eight points, five rebounds, and three assists in an all-around complete game.
· Jewel Watkins also finished with eight points, six rebounds and led all players with two blocks.
· Khya Jenkins was the team's second leading rebounder with seven boards, evened with seven points.
· Jalynda Salley chipped in with four points and five boards, while Nadjy Amira grabbed six rebounds with three points.
· Coppin outshot Howard, 30.8% to 24.1% as the Eagles put together its finest defensive game of the season. The 24.1% shooting that CSU held the Bison to was the lowest by an Eagles opponent since January 27, 2018 when South Carolina State shot just 22.2% in a 56-39 CSU victory.
How it Happened
· Hope Evans scored eight of the Eagles' 11 points in the first quarter. After opening the quarter with a three, she went on and scored two fast break buckets.
· With a 13-point tie at the start of the second quarter, Staples and Salley sparked a 7-0 Coppin run. The Eagles went into the second half with a 21-17 lead.
· Bucknor and Jenkins opened the second half with six-straight points to extend CSU's lead into double-digits.
· Jenkins and Bucknor went off four six points apiece in the third quarter alone.
· Watkins and Staples carried out another 6-0 run to bring out a 16-point lead (41-25).
· The Eagles maintained a double-digit lead through the entire fourth quarter as Staples hit her last free-throw to close the game with a 52-41 victory.
