Box Score GREENVILLE, N.C. – Coppin State was outscored, 23-12 in the final quarter in a 59-51 loss at East Carolina on Saturday afternoon at Williams Arena at Minges Coliseum. The Eagles now stand at 3-6 on the season while the Pirates move to 4-3.
Laila Lawrence led the Eagles with 11 points, finishing a rebound shy of a double-double while
Niyah Gaston hit three 3-pointers for a season-high nine points.
Angel Jones added seven points with a team-high three assists followed by
Faith Blackstone, Colleen Bucknor and
Tiffany Hammond with six points apiece. Bucknor matched Lawrence with a game-high nine rebounds.
The Eagles narrowly outshot East Carolina, 37.3% to 35.7% and hit two more threes but the Pirates hit 15-of-19 from the line compared to just 7-of-8 for CSU. Coppin also committed 26 turnovers which led to 26 points the Pirates.
How it Happened
- Blackstone got the scoring started with a layup just seconds into the game before East Carolina scored the next eight points.
- Bucknor stopped the scoreless drought at the 5:49 mark, and after a Pirates bucket, Gaston hit back-to-back threes followed by a pair of jumpers from Charia Roberts to give Coppin back the lead with 2:37 left in the period.
- The Pirates answered right back with a layup, but Tiffany Hammond buried a three just before the end of the quarter, giving the Eagles a 17-12 advantage.
- Coppin doubled its lead with five-straight points to open the second, starting with a free throw and a layup by Lawrence and a jumper in transition from Angel Jones, who returned from injury.
- ECU scored six-straight points to pull within four, but Lawrence scored at the other end before Hammond drained another triple to extend the lead back to 27-18.
- A 7-0 run by East Carolina pulled them within 27-25 at the half and the teams played virtually even in the third with CSU claiming a 39-36 lead going into the final period.
- An ECU layup, followed by four free throws gave the hosts a 42-39 advantage, but Bucknor hit a pair from the stripe and added a layup to keep it a one-point deficit with 6:45 to play.
- Six-straight points by the Pirates gave them a 50-43 advantage, but Lawrence, Staples and Jones all found the back of the net. Lawrence also answered two free throws by ECU with two of her own to keep it a one-score deficit at 53-51.
- East Carolina came right back with a dagger, burying a three and it hit three free throws down the stretch to seal the victory.
