BALTIMORE – Faith Blackstone scored a team-high 18 points and
Angel Jones added 15 as Coppin State's women's basketball team fell to Campbell, 68-55, on Thursday night at PEC Arena. The Eagles fall to 0-2 on the young season while the Camels improve to 2-0.
Blackstone hit 7-of-17 shots from the floor while hitting a pair of threes and both of her free throws, and she matched Jones and
Tyler Gray with a team-high five rebounds. Jones made 7-of-9 from the floor and she was followed up by
Mossi Staples with seven points and a game-high five assists.
Gray chipped in with five points,
Colleen Bucknor and
Laila Lawrence finished with four points each and
Khya Jenkins also scored a bucket.
Campbell outshot Coppin, 53.2% to 35.5% and pulled away in the fourth quarter by outscoring the Eagles, 15-4.
How it Happened
- A high-scoring first quarter saw Campbell lead, 21-19 with Staples leading the Eagles with seven points.
- Coppin took a brief 26-25 lead in the second quarter as Blackstone buried a jumper but the Camels scored at the other end to start a 10-0 run.
- Lawrence and Blackstone scored on back-to-back possessions to pull within five before Campbell got five-straight points by Brittany Staves to close the half and go into the break on top, 44-34.
- CSU nearly doubled up the Camels in the third quarter and went on a 15-5 run over a 7:31 stretch with Jones scoring eight points during the stretch.
- Gray tied the score at 51 with a three from the wing with 1:37 left in the quarter.
- The Camels hit a pair of free throws at the 1:11 mark to go up two heading into the final quarter and scored ten of the first 12 points of the fourth to extend their lead to double digits.
- A bucket by Jones with 3:04 left was Coppin's last field goal and the Camels answered that with a three to seal the win.
