Watkins Posts a Double-Double in Loss at Howard

WASHINGTON, D.C. – With a three-point differentiation in the final seven seconds of the game, and outnumbering Howard across the board in rebounds, three-point field goals, bench points and second chance points, the Coppin State women's basketball team fell shy of four to Howard University, 62-58 on Monday afternoon at the Burr Gymnasium.  The Eagles now stand at 1-3 in conference, while Howard moves to 3-2 in the MEAC.  
  
Inside the Numbers 

  • Jewel Watkins led the Eagles with a double-double of 20 points and 11 rebounds while hitting five 3-pointers.  

  • Mossi Staples scored in double figures with ten points, six rebounds, and two assists. 

  • Cortney Gardner had nine points, seven rebounds and matched a game high two steals to lead the Eagles.  

  • Colleen Bucknor contributed seven points and was the team's second leading rebounder with nine boards.  

  • Jalynda Salley chipped in with five points and four rebounds. Hope Evans also scored finished with five points 

  • Nadjy Amira shot a perfect 2-of-2 from the stripe 

How it Happened 

  • Amira and Gardner went on a 4-0 run in the first to cut the Bisons double digit lead. 

  • The Eagles went on a 7-0 run at the start of the second quarter with a pull-up jumper from Gardner, a three from Watkins, and a pair of free-throws from Staples 

  • Watkins hit two threes in the second quarter alone 

  • Salley scored an and one to close the quarter. The Eagles finished the half trailing Howard 24-18  

  • Watkins and Staples hit four straight threes at the start of the third quarter to cut the Bisons lead to four. 

  • Watkins scored eight points in the third quarter alone 

  • Salley, Watkins and Bucknor scored three straight and ones for the Eagles at the start of the fourth quarter.  

  • Watkins and Evans hit back to back threes to trail the Bisons by five at 2:12 

  • Evans went on a quick 5-0 run before Gardner hit a free-throw to trail Howard by two with one minute left of play.  

  • Destiney Howell hit a jumper to convert a four-point Howard lead 

  • Bucknor sunk a free-throw to bring out a three-point game with forty seconds left.  

  • Howell extended the Bisons lead to five with 22 seconds left 

  • Gardner hit a three with seven seconds left of play, however Howard sunk one more free-throw to secure a 62-58 win 

Up Next: CSU heads to Princess Anne Maryland to match up against Maryland Eastern Shore on Saturday, January 28th for a 2pm tip-off. Two days later, the Eagles will host Delaware State on Monday, January 30th  for a 5:30 tip-off inside the PEC Arena.
