BALTIMORE – After a tied game through three quarters, and a double-digit output from Nadjy Amira, crosstown rivals Morgan State Bears outscored Coppin State in the fourth quarter for a final score of 61-46 on Saturday afternoon inside PEC Arena. Coppin is now 1-1 in the MEAC while Morgan advances to 2-0 in conference.
Jewel Watkins led the led the Eagles with 13 points, eight rebounds and a career high four blocks. Amira made her Coppin debut in double digits with 10 points, four rebounds, shot a perfect 2-of-2 from the stripe, and led the Eagles in field-goal percent, shooting 66.7 percent from the floor. Mossi Staples was the second leading scorer with 12 points, two assists, and a team high two steals. Hope Evans chipped in with five points, two rebounds, and two assists. Alexandria Hamilton finished with four points and matched a team high eight rebounds along with Colleen Bucknor.
Coppin had an early 10-3 run with Amira scoring reverse layup instantly off the bench followed by a pair of jumpers from Staples and Watkins. Coppin and Morgan tied at 12 to close the quarter. Amira went on a 4-0 scoring run alone in the second quarter to take a two-point lead over Morgan. Staples and Evans hit consecutive threes to close the quarter with a tie at the half (24-24).
The Eagles kept the wheels turning in the second half with a floater from Evans followed by a three from Watkins. Amira went on another 4-0 run to bring the Eagles back from a four-point deficit. Coppin closed the half to tie Morgan 41-41. After several lead exchanges throughout the game, Morgan pulled away on a 15-0 run to outscore Coppin in the fourth quarter, for a 61-46 victory.
