NORFOLK, Va. – After an upset to advance to the semifinals, Coppin State's softball season came to an end with a 3-1 heartbreaking loss at Norfolk State on a wet Friday morning in the MEAC Tournament.
Norfolk took an early 1-0 lead, scoring on a passed ball in the opening inning but the Eagles came right back, tying the score in the second.
Avianna Peterson drew a one-out walk and scored from third on a single up the middle by pitcher
Shawnee Ronyak who helped her own cause at the plate.
Ronyak retired nine-straight batters at one point before the Spartans broke through for a run in the fourth and fifth to go up, 3-1.
Coppin threatened in the seventh, getting the tying run to the plate after
Melanie Aguilera delivered with a two-out single. A pinch-hit appearance by
Lynn Porter was well struck, but to the deepest part of the field for the final out.
Ronyak went the distance from the rubber, allowing just two earned runs on six hits with four strikeouts in the complete game.
