DURHAM, N.C. – Coppin State's softball team fell in the series finale at North Carolina Central University, 9-3, on Sunday afternoon at Thomas Brooks Park. With the loss, CSU falls to 4-14 in the MEAC with a three-game series against South Carolina State next weekend to close the regular season.
Vanessa Carrizosa went 2-for-3 with two runs scored and a walk, but Coppin only got two other hits on the day, coming from
Isabella Zalba and
Shawnee Ronyak. Zalba also reached via two free passes as CSU drew seven walks in the game.
In the circle, Ronyak gave up one earned run over the first 2.2 innings before
Maren Bernal was charged with four runs over the next 1.2 innings.
Kayleigh Reome closed out the game and allowed two earned runs over the final five outs.
Ronyak gave Coppin a 1-0 lead to start the game to help her own cause, recording a single through the left side of the infield to drive in Carrizosa. She then held Central scoreless the first two innings before the hosts took the lead with two runs in the third.
Zalba slugged her second home run of the season with one out in the fifth, tying the score at 2-2 before Central responded with four runs in the bottom half. The hosts tacked on three more runs in the sixth and CSU could only muster a run in the seventh as
Avianna Peterson was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded with two outs.
CSU hosts South Carolina State on April 30-May 1 with Saturday's doubleheader set for 1 pm followed by Senior Day on Sunday at 12 pm.
