DOVER, Del. – Coppin State's baseball team split a pair of games at Delaware State, taking the nightcap, 5-2, after falling in game one, 7-4, on Saturday afternoon at Bob Reed Field. With the victory, the Eagles move to 17-23 overall and remain atop the league standings with a 13-10 mark in the MEAC.
Game 1
Marcos Castillo went 3-for-4 with two RBI while
Jordan Hamberg added a pair of hits to lead Coppin offensively in game one. The duo also stole two bases each.
Josh Hankins scored twice while recording a hit and drawing a while as
Sebastien Sarabia scored a run, drove in another, and walked twice.
On the mound,
Justin Johnson threw the first 1.1 innings before
Johan Freudenburg allowed four runs over the next 1.2 innings.
Nico Felber threw the final 3.0 innings, giving up two runs on four hits while striking out four.
Castillo put CSU on top with an RBI single in the first inning, driving in Hamberg from second after he walked and stole second base. Delaware State tied it up in the second before the Eagles retook the lead in the top of the third on Sarabia's sacrifice fly to deep center which scored Hankins from third.
Delaware State responded with two in the third to go on top, 3-2 before adding three more in the fourth to extend its advantage to four runs.
Coppin fought back with a pair of runs in the fifth as Hankins scored on a wild pitch following a leadoff single. Castillo drove in another run just after, driving in Sarabia to cut the deficit to 6-4.
Felber faced the minimum in the fifth, freezing a pair of Hornets, but DSU tacked on an insurance run in the sixth.
The Eagles only managed a single from Castillo in the seventh and the senior from Round Rock, Texas, stole both second and third before the final out.
Game 2
Marcos Herrand gave up just two runs over the first 4.0 innings to earn the win while
Giovanni Canales picked up the save without allowing a hit over the final 3.0 innings.
Tyler Lloyd was the lone Eagles player to record a pair of hits while
Jordan Hamberg and
Sebastien Sarabia both drove in a pair of runs with a base hit and a walk. Hamberg also homered and scored twice while leadoff hitter
Wellington Balsley scored twice to go 1-for-2 with an RBI and a walk.
Sarabia drove in a pair of runs in the first inning, finding the gap in right center for a double to score Balsley and Hamberg. Balsley added a sacrifice fly in the fourth to make it a 3-0 score.
Herrand cruised through the first four innings on the mound but was lifted after a pair of singles to start the fifth. Both runners came in to score before the side was retired, but Canales tossed a 1-2-3 sixth inning before Hamberg slugged his team-leading sixth home run of the season in the seventh for a pair of runs.
With a three-run lead, Canales issued a two-out walk in the seventh but got
Mike Carrington looking to end the ballgame.
