Baseball Falls in Slugfest at Georgetown, 17-11

BETHESDA, Md. – Marcos Castillo and Jordan Hamberg both homered and drove in three runs apiece but the Coppin State baseball team fell to Georgetown in a slugfest, 17-11, on Wednesday night at Shirley Povich Field.  The Eagles now stand at 9-15 overall while the Hoyas move to 16-9.

Castillo went 3-for-5 on the day while Hamberg was one of four CSU players with a pair of hits which included Sebastien Sarabia, Corey Miley and Landen Argabright.  Sarabia also drove in two runs and walked twice, Miley doubled two times and drove in a run while Argabright scored twice.  Wellington Balsley also had himself a day at the plate, recording a double, a walk, a sacrifice hit and two runs scored while also being hit by a pitch.

Sam Batis got the start and got through the first inning before relieved by Luke Baker, who was credited with the loss while giving up four runs in 2.0 innings.  Matt Perkins had the best outing for an Eagles pitcher, striking out two while not allowing a base hit or a walk in the next two innings.  John Neeld allowed a pair of runs in his lone inning of work before Justin Johnson gave up five runs.  Johan Freudenburg held the Hoyas scoreless in the final inning.

Coppin got on the board first as Castillo drove in Balsley with an RBI single to center field in the top of the first, but the Hoyas responded for three runs in their half of the first.

Both teams put up crooked numbers in the second inning with the Eagles tagging Georgetown for seven runs. Miley doubled to start the rally and he was followed by back-to-back singles from Argabright and Hamberg.  Following a popup, Brian Nicolas drove in Argabright with a groundout to tie the score at 3-3.

Eimir Perez then drew a walk, and he and Hamberg both scored on Sarabia's double to the gap in left center, giving Coppin back the lead at 5-3.  Following a pitching change, Castillo welcomed the new pitcher on the very first pitch with a two-run blast over the fence in left field to extend the lead to 7-3. Toran Smith was hit on the very next offering and he scored on Miley's double to left center.

CSU's lead did not last long as Georgetown erupted for seven runs to take a 9-8 lead.

As Coppin was held scoreless over the next four innings, Georgetown pulled away with three runs over that stretch, extending its advantage to 12-8.

The Eagles battled back to within a run with a three-run seventh which included a two-run homer from Hamberg as well as an RBI single from Sarabia. However, the Hoyas put up five runs in their half to make it a 17-11 ballgame and CSU went down in order over the final two innings.

On deck for Coppin is a four-game MEAC series against Maryland Eastern Shore on April 1-3 at Blandair Park in Columbia, Md. Friday's single game is set for 3 pm, followed by a 12 pm doubleheader on Saturday and a 12 pm single game on Sunday.
