Genovese Homers to Open Game One; Softball Drops Pair to Mount St. Mary’s

BALTIMORE – Alexis Genovese homered to lead off the game one, but the Coppin State softball team dropped the opener to Mount St. Mary's, 6-2 on Tuesday afternoon at CSU Softball Field.  The Eagles also took a loss in the nightcap, 7-0.

Genovese hit her second home run of the season to tie the score at 1-1 after the Mountaineers scored a run in their half of the first inning off starting pitcher Vanessa Carrizosa.  The Mount scored once again in the second, but Brooke Caballero tied the score at 2-2 with a single to right field, scoring Brissa Alvarado from second.

Carrizosa tossed 1-2-3 innings in both the third and fourth, and a Mount player reached on an error in the fifth but held the visitors scoreless.  The Mountaineers were able to score twice in each of the last two innings, but Coppin was only able to put one runner on base.

Genovese had two of the team's four hits in game one while Carrizosa was charged with just four earned runs on seven hits in the complete game.

Alvarado made her season debut in the circle to start game two, and after a scoreless first, gave up three runs in the second and two more in the third before being replaced by Maren Bernal.  Bernal gave up just one hit over three scoreless innings before Shawnee Ronyak allowed two runs over the next 1.1 innings.  Kayleigh Reome retired both batters she faced which included a strikeout.

Carrizosa, Avianna Peterson, Alvarado and Melanie Aguilera each had a base hit in game two, with Aguilera's knock going for a double.

Coppin returns to action on April 2-3 when it hosts Norfolk State in a three-game MEAC series.  Saturday's doubleheader is scheduled for 1 pm, followed by a 12 pm single game on Sunday.
