Baseball Takes MEAC Opening Series with 3-2 Win Over Delaware State

COLUMBIA, Md. – Marcos Castillo hit a go-ahead sacrifice fly in the sixth inning and Johan Freudenburg threw three dominant innings to pick up the save in Coppin State's 3-2 MEAC victory over Delaware State on Sunday afternoon at Blandair Park.  The Eagles now stand at 7-12 overall and won the series 3-1, putting them in first place in the conference.

With the score tied at 2-2, the bases loaded and one out in the sixth, Delaware State went to their bullpen to face Castillo.  Castillo hammered a shot to left field, that was held up by the wind, but was deep enough to score Landen Argabright from third.  Argabright got the inning started with a one-out single before advancing to third when Mike Dorcean was hit by a pitch, followed by a passed ball.

Freudenburg took over for starting pitcher Jordan Hamberg to start the seventh and struck out a pair while issuing a walk. The first Hornets batter of the eighth reached on an error but Freudenburg regrouped for a strikeout before forcing two weak grounders.  Freudenburg then tossed a 1-2-3 ninth inning to pick up his first save of the season.

Hamberg earned the win to improve to 2-1 on the year.  In 6.0 innings, Hamberg allowed just two runs on five hits while striking out four.

Wellington Balsley went 1-for-2 with two runs scored and reached base via the walk three times.  Brian Nicolas drew a pair of walks and drove in a run while Hankins, Corey Miley and Argabright all had base hits.

Coppin State pitching held the Hornets to just five base hits on the day.

The Eagles will head to Bethesda, Md., to face Georgetown on Wednesday, March 23 for a 3 pm single game at Shirley Povich Field.
