Baseball Blanks George Mason Over Final Five Innings in Loss to Patriots

FAIRFAX, Va. – Coppin State's baseball team shutout George Mason over the final five innings but fell to the Patriots, 9-3, on Tuesday afternoon at Spuhler Field.  The Eagles fall to 4-11 on the season while the Patriots move to 7-8.

Marcos Herrand allowed just two hits over his 3.0 innings of relief while striking out a pair with John Neeld and Rashad Ruff throwing scoreless innings in the seventh and eighth.  Johan Freudenburg gave up five runs over the first two innings before Luke Baker was credited with four runs in his lone inning of work.

Brian Nicolas had two of Coppin's four base hits while scoring a run and driving in another. Sebastien Sarabia drove in two runs and Tyler Lloyd had a hit in his return to the lineup.

George Mason scored a pair of runs in the first inning before adding a run in the second before erupting for six runs in the third to take a 9-0 lead.

The Eagles broke through in the ninth for three runs but it was not enough to overtake the Patriots. Wellington Balsley and Marcos Castillo reached with back-to-back walks with two outs before Nicolas drove in Balsley with a single to right field.  After a double steal, Sarabia lined a shot up the middle, plating both Castillo and Nicolas.

CSU hosts Delaware State for a four-game series on March 18-20 to open MEAC play. Friday's single game is set for 3 pm, followed by a 12 pm doubleheader on Saturday and a 12 pm single game on Sunday.
