FAIRFAX, Va. – Coppin State's softball team dropped a pair of games at George Mason on Wednesday afternoon at the GMU Softball Complex. The Eagles fell in the opener, 7-2, before dropping the nightcap, 9-4.
In game one, Coppin held an early lead as
Isabella Zalba connected for a triple in the first, scoring
Vanessa Carrizosa who had walked earlier in the inning with one out.
Shawnee Ronyak held the Patriots scoreless through the first two innings, but the Eagles failed to capitalize despite putting runners in scoring position in the second and third. GMU tied the score with a run in the bottom of the third before taking a 3-1 lead with two runs in the fourth.
Coppin got a single from
Alexis Genovese and both
Brissa Alvarado and Zalba drew walks but came up empty, and the Patriots made them pay with four more runs in their half of the frame. The Eagles managed a run in the seventh on
Brooke Caballero's sacrifice fly which scored
Lynn Porter.
Zalba went 2-for-3 with an RBI and a walk in the opener while Carrizosa had a hit, a run scored and a pair of walks.
Ronyak allowed just three runs over the first four innings in the loss while
Maren Bernal gave up four runs in the final 2.0 innings.
The nightcap started off well for Coppin as the Eagles put a run across in each of the first two innings to take a 2-0 lead.
Makayla Caballero drove in a run with a two-out single to score Alvarado in the first and
Avianna Peterson scored on a wild pitch in the second after she singled, stole second and got to third on
Desiree Carrizosa's sacrifice bunt.
GMU got one of the runs back in its half of the second before taking a 4-2 lead with three runs in the third. The Eagles made it a one-run game in the fourth on an RBI single by Peterson which scored
Melanie Aguilera, but the Patriots put five runs on the board in their half to extend the lead to 9-3.
Aguilera delivered with an RBI double in the fifth but the Eagles could not muster any more runs.
Aguilera and Peterson both had a pair of hits in game two while
Kayleigh Reome took the loss after giving up nine runs in 3.2 innings. Bernal retired all seven batters she faced in relief.
Coppin returns to action on Friday, March 11 when it hosts Drexel in a 2 pm doubleheader. The Eagles will also host the Dragons at 12 pm on Sunday, March 13.
