Trio of Eagles Homer as Softball Falls to UMBC & Georgetown

CATONSVILLE, Md. – Despite home runs from Alexis Genovese, Melanie Aguilera and Brooke Caballero, the Coppin State softball team was defeated in a pair of games in the second day of the UMBC Round Robin on Sunday afternoon.  The Eagles dropped the first game to UMBC, 11-3, before falling just short against Georgetown, 7-5.

In the opener, Jaslyn Sanchez went 2-for-3 with a run scored but Genovese provided the big bat with a two-run homer. Vanessa Carrizosa, Isabella Zalba, Shawnee Ronyak, and Caballero also added base hits with Zalba driving in a run and Ronyak drawing a walk.

UMBC took an early lead with a run in each of the first two innings before Zalba drove in Carrizosa in the third with an RBI single, cutting the deficit to 2-1.

After the Retrievers put three runs across in the bottom half of the frame, Genovese blasted a home run over the wall in left field, bringing the Eagles within two. UMBC got both runs back in its at-bat before scoring four runs in the sixth to pick up the win.

Ronyak was credited with the loss on the rubber, allowing four runs in 2.1 innings while striking out two.  Kayleigh Reome gave up six runs over the final 3.1 innings.

Coppin took an early 2-0 lead against Georgetown as Aguilera slugged a two-run homer in the first inning.  The Hoyas, however, scored five unanswered runs before Caballero's solo shot in the fifth, cutting the deficit to 5-3.

Both teams scored a pair of runs in the sixth to keep it a two-run game as Caballero recorded a two-run single which scored Zalba and Ronyak.

Aguilera and Caballero both went 2-for-3 with a run scored with Caballero driving in three runs while Aguilera had a pair of RBI.

Carrizosa went the distance in the circle for the Eagles, allowing six earned runs with two strikeouts in 7.0 innings.

The Eagles will take part in Towson's Demarini Tiger Clash on March 4-6.  Coppin will play Providence and Towson on Friday, the Friars once again on Saturday afternoon, and both Columbia and the host Tigers on Sunday.
