COLUMBIA, Md. – Coppin State's baseball team rallied from a 4-0 deficit to tie the score, but Saint Peter's closed the game with five unanswered runs to win 9-4 on Friday afternoon at Blandair Park. The Eagles now stand at 1-4 on the season while the Peacocks even their record at 1-1.
Sebastien Sarabia had a three-hit day for Coppin while
Mike Dorcean also recorded a pair of hits, including a long double, and scored twice.
Brian Nicolas tripled and drove in a run while
Toran Smith,
Josh Hankins and
Wellington Balsley were credited with RBI.
Jordan Hamberg also had a base hit and drew a walk.
Giovanni Canales received the loss as he was credited with seven earned runs over 5.1 innings. The right hander settled down after a four-run second inning as he got 1-2-3 innings in the third and fifth.
The Eagles scored a run in the second, third, fourth and fifth innings to tie the score after being down 4-0. Hankins drove in the team's first run with a double to score Dorcean in the second before Nicolas' RBI triple in the third scored Sarabia.
Balsley laid down a perfect sac bunt in the fourth to score Dorcean and Smith tied the score as he reached on an error which plated Hamberg.
Saint Peter's score a run on Canales in the sixth before he was relieved by
Luke Baker with two runners on and one out. Both inherited runners scored, and the Peacocks added another before Baker got a strikeout and a popup to get out of the frame.
Johan Freudenburg took over for Baker to start the seventh and proceeded to strike out the side, all swinging, but CSU failed to capitalize, leaving two runners stranded after they reached on errors.
SPU added an insurance run in the eighth and the Navy & Gold left three Eagles on base over the final two innings as
Nico Felber tossed a scoreless ninth for Coppin.
CSU and Saint Peter's will be back in action on Saturday, February 26 for a 11 am doubleheader at Blandair Park.
