WASHINGTON, D.C. – Despite outrebounding the Colonials and burying a season-high nine 3-pointers, the Coppin State women's basketball team fell at George Washington, 61-51 on Thursday afternoon at Charles E. Smith Center. The Eagles now stand at 3-10 on the season while GW moves to 8-5.
Inside the Numbers
- Mossi Staples led the Eagles with 14 points while hitting four 3-pointers and adding three rebounds, two assists, a steal and a block.
- Jalynda Salley just missed on a double-double, recording nine points and a season-high 13 rebounds while adding her first career 3-pointer.
- Jewel Watkins and Colleen Bucknor contributed seven points apiece with Bucknor matching Hope Evans for a team-high three assists. Bucknor also finished with seven boards.
- Evans and Cortney Gardner also had five points each and Alexandria Hamilton pitched in with four.
- Coppin held a 42-35 advantage on the glass but was outshot, 38.6% to 33.9%.
- Mia Lakstigala led all players with 21 points.
How it Happened
- A three by Salley early on gave CSU a 5-4 lead two minutes into the game but GW went on a 9-0 run to go up 13-5.
- Bucknor stopped the spurt with a layup before hitting a three to pull Coppin to within 13-10 before four-straight Colonials points.
- Watkins buried a jumper with just under two minutes remaining to make it a 17-12 score after the first.
- CSU outscored GW, 16-11 in the second quarter, tying it at 28 at the half. This included a three at the buzzer by Hamilton while Gardner and Salley combined for nine points.
- GW opened the second half on a 9-0 run before Evans hit a three to end the drought. The Colonials kept the momentum and hit three-straight triples to open a 50-34 lead before Salley and GW traded buckets to end the quarter.
- Layups by Bucknor and Watkins sandwiched a GW field goal early in the fourth before Staples hit consecutive threes and Watkins added another layup, cutting the deficit to 54-49 with 3:45 left in regulation.
- However, the hosts ended the game scoring seven of the final nine points to come away with the win.
