LORETTO, Pa. – Mossi Staples scored a career-high 26 points to lead the Coppin State women's basketball team to a 66-57 victory at Saint Francis University on Sunday afternoon at Maurice Stokes Center. With the victory, the Eagles improve to 3-8 on the season.
Inside the Numbers
- Staples played all 40 minutes as she hit 6-of-16 shots from the floor with four 3-pointers along with 10-of-14 free throws en route to her career outing. She also added four rebounds, three steals and a pair of assists. Staples' four triples were also a career-high while her ten free throws matched a career-high.
- Jewel Watkins and Hope Evans also reached double figures with 13 and ten points, respectively, with each grabbing four rebounds. Evans had a team-high three assists.
- Alexandria Hamilton chipped in with eight points, followed by Jalynda Salley with seven points, a team-high six rebounds and a pair of blocks.
- The Eagles punctuated their win by going 22-of-32 from the free throw line and forced 27 Red Flash turnovers which turned into 24 points off turnovers.
- Aliyah Moore led SFU with 14 points and 15 rebounds but also committed ten turnovers.
How it Happened
- Coppin led by as many as six points in the first half but the score was tied at 29-29 headed to the locker room.
- The score remained close throughout the third quarter as Staples score the final four points of the period to give the Eagles a 46-43 lead.
- Staples found Bucknor inside for a bucket to start the fourth which was answered by SFU, but Coppin remained in control the rest of the way.
- Staples hit a pair of free throws, and after a three by Watkins, held its largest lead of the game at 53-45 with 7:01 remaining.
- Staples continued to do damage at the free throw line and she added two more from the stripe following a breakaway from Evans with 45 ticks let to seal the win.
