Brown Wins VUU Title

Logan Brown Wins Tournament Title; Bowling Takes Second at Virginia Union Invitational

MIDLOTHIAN, Va. – Logan Brown won her second individual title of the season to lead the Coppin State bowling team to a second-place finish at the Virginia Union Invitational this weekend at Bowl America. The Eagles went 8-2 with 8,239 total pins to average 164.8 per game which included a perfect 5-0 mark in traditional matches on Saturday.
 
A junior from Waldorf, Md., Brown averaged a 192.40 in traditional matches, tallying 962 pins and had the high game of the tournament with a 220 against the host Panthers.  Brown followed up with a 182 against Norfolk State, 197 against Howard, 178 against Virginia State an a 185 in an upset victory over nationally ranked Mount St. Mary's.
 
Brown averaged 19.24 pins per frame with an 88 percent overall fill.  She put up 8.70 pins in her first ball and accumulated a 36% strike percentage and 81.3% spare conversion rate.
 
Kaylah Castillo also received All-Tournament Team accolades, finishing fourth overall with 900 pins and a 180.00 average.  Castillo produced a pair of 200+ games, rolling a 202 against VUU and a 209 against Norfolk. 
 
Jalyne Myers and TaVera Johnson both closed out their traditional matches on Saturday strong.  Myers, who rolled a 162.00 over four matches, recorded a 194 in the win over the Mountaineers while Johnson bowled a 183, increasing her three-game average to a 168.33.
 
Xiani Carpenter (335 pins; 167.50), Temira White (331 pins; 165.50), Janaye Monroe (286 pins; 143.00) and Elizabeth Stokley (266 pins; 133.00) all competed in a pair of traditional matches with Carpenter posting a 192 against Howard to lead the group.
 
On Saturday, Coppin won all five of their matches with the highlight being a 908-841 win over #11 Mount St. Mary's to close the day.
 
In Friday's Baker matches, the Eagles went 3-2 with wins against Howard (927-647), Virginia State (708-368) and Bowie State (746-653) while falling to Mount St. Mary's (875-807) and Fayetteville State (874-818).
 
Sunday's bracket style play featured best-of-seven baker style play.  In the opening round, Coppin won two of the first three games against The Mount and held a 3-2 lead after a 209-169 win in the fifth, but the Mountaineers won the next two to advance.
 
Coppin knocked off Norfolk State in four-straight games to reach the championship match against The Mount.  The Eagles won the opening game, 187-170, but dropped the next four to finish second overall.
 
The Eagles return to action on Friday-Saturday, November 11-12 at MEAC Meet #1, hosted at Millsboro Lanes in Millsboro, Del.
