BALTIMORE – Coppin State's women's basketball team dropped a tightly contested matchup to Howard, 70-64 on Monday night at PEC Arena. The Eagles fall to 8-9 on the year and 2-2 in the MEAC while the Bison move to 8-7 overall and 2-1 in league play.
Jaia Alexander led three CSU players in double figures, finishing with 15 points and six rebounds while
Aliyah Lawson and
Jalynda Salley added 11 and ten points, respectively.
Colleen Bucknor was impressive on both ends of the floor, contributing nine points, nine rebounds, two assists, two steals and two blocks.
Jewel Watkins also produced eight points off the bench, along with two blocks.
Coppin outshot Howard, 44.2% to 36.5% but turned the ball over 21 times which led to 17 Bison points. The Eagles kept it close the entire game by playing solid defense, forcing 13 turnovers, and converted that into 16 points. The game was close throughout and featured five ties with 11 lead changes and neither team extended a lead in double figures.
Tied at 47-47 going into the final quarter, Howard scored the first eight points, but Coppin clawed its way back and pulled to within a single point twice in the final minutes following a pair of free throws by
Mossi Staples each time.
Following two free throws by Staples with 15 ticks left, the Bison converted on a three-point play on the ensuing possession and CSU came up empty following a timeout. Howard then hit two more free three throws to seal the win.
