Coppin State Women’s Hoops Looks to Remain on Top of the MEAC; Travels to Norfolk State on Saturday

Coppin Contributors 
Three Eagles average in double figures, led by Jaia Alexander's 14.9 points per game (1st in MEAC) and 7.5 rebounds per game (3rd in MEAC). Alexander also leads the conference in free-throw field goal percentage at 78 percent.  Aliyah Lawson is putting up 12 points (5th in MEAC) and leads the league in three-point field goals, totaling 37 made threes for the season.  Mossi Staples is averaging 10.3 points per game (9th) and is ranked second in the MEAC in assists with 3.3 assists per game, and fourth in steals (2.3).  Jalynda Salley is ranked eighth in the conference in both rebounds (6.4 RPG) and blocks (0.9), while averaging 7.9 points per game.  Colleen Bucknor is ranked seventh in the MEAC in blocks, totaling 14, and ninth in rebounds (6.0).   
 
Climbing the Charts 
Aliyah Lawson is now tied with Thelma Lyles for third place in CSU history with 121 career 3-pointers.  She is now seven threes away from matching Genesis Lucas for second all-time.  Jalynda Salley had 94 career blocks, putting her fifth all-time.  Salley is three blocks away to match Chance Graham at fourth (97).   
 
Last Time Out 
Coppin is undefeated in conference play thus far after victories over Morgan State and North Carolina Central.  Aliyah Lawson led four players in double figures with 14 points, seven rebounds, four assists, and sunk three 3-pointers.  Jaia Alexander tallied 13 points and nine rebounds, while Jalynda Salley had a game high of 11 rebounds, along with eight points.  Jewel Watkins contributed 10 points and 8 rebounds and Mossi Staples pitched in with 11 points, four assists and three steals. 
 
About the Matchup 
Coppin is 2-0 in conference play for first time since 2014-15 season and strives to maintain first place in the MEAC standings, as Norfolk is tied for second in the conference with Howard.  A Coppin win will solidify their first-place seed, while a Norfolk victory would swap with Coppin for first in the MEAC standings.  The teams have split the last four meetings.   
 
Scouting the Spartans 
Camille Downs, who played for Coppin in the 2017-18, leads the Spartans with 13.5 PPG.  She is coming off a career high of 28 points against North Carolina Central.  Downs is the only player scoring in double-figures.  Tatiana Jones is the Spartans leading rebounder with 6.4 RPG.  The Spartans are ranked second in the MEAC defensively, averaging nearly 11 steals per game and 36.4 rebounds per game, respectively.
