EMMITSBURG, Md. – Coppin State's
Sebastien Sarabia and
Mike Dorcean both homered and combined for seven RBI as the Eagles come-from-behind effort at Mount St. Mary's fell just short, 10-9, on Friday afternoon. The game was called after the top of the eighth inning due to darkness.
Sarabia finished 2-for-4 with two runs and three RBI which included a three-run home run in the first inning. Dorcean went 2-for-2 with a run, a walk and four RBI while blasting his first career home run as well.
Darren Hagan also had a two-hit day while
Nick Morales added a hit while also drawing a walk.
Tim Ruffino took the loss on the mound, allowing five earned runs in 3.0 innings while striking out four.
Giovanni Canales gave up one run while striking out a pair in 1.1 innings.
John Neeld fanned two while tossing 2.1 scoreless innings and
Tyler Nichol struck out the lone batter he faced.
The Eagles scored four runs in the first two innings as Sarabia hit a three-run homer in the first, scoring Hagan and Morales. Coppin added another in the second as
Matt Day singled, stole a base and scored all the way from second on a sacrifice fly by Dorcean to deep left field.
Mount St. Mary's scored three unearned runs in the second and took the lead with seven runs in the next three innings to go up, 10-4.
Coppin erupted for five runs on six hits in the sixth to pull within a single run. Sarabia,
Toran Smith and
Eddie Javier, Jr., recorded three-straight singles to score a run and Smith scored as well on a fielder's choice off the bat of
Devyan Dyal. Dorcean followed up with a three-run home run to right field to cut the deficit to 10-9.
Following a Mountaineers pitching change, Hagan and Morales singled with a pair of outs but were left stranded.
Coppin was retired in order in the seventh and Dorcean was left in scoring position in the eighth after a single and stolen base.
The same two teams will meet on Saturday, March 6 in a 12 pm doubleheader.
