Coppin State Women’s Basketball Opens Season at La Salle

Opening Tip
The Eagles have a busy November playing six games in the month while hosting two of them in the PEC Arena. After CSU opens their season at La Salle they host William & Mary on Thursday, November 11. Coppin will finish out the month at Rhode Island (Nov. 14) and East Carolina (Nov. 23) before welcoming Saint Francis (Pa.) on Nov. 28.
 
Last Time Out
This is the third meeting between the Eagles and the Explorers with La Salle winning all three games. They last played on December 28, 2020 and the Explorers defeated the Eagles 75-49. The first matchup between the two opponents was also in December on the 29th day of 2003.
 
Preseason Poll
Redshirt juniors Aliyah Lawson and Jalynda Salley were named to the Preseason All-MEAC Teams. Lawson received First Team accolades while Salley earned Second Team accolades while the Eagles were picked to finish sixth in the Preseason Poll.
 
Coppin Contributors
A Second Team All-MEAC selection last season, Lawson finished second in the conference with 14.5 points per game while ranking third with 38 3-point field goals.  A native of Whitby, Ontario, Canada, Lawson also finished with 4.5 rebounds per game to go with 24 assists and 17 steals. Lawson received three MEAC Player of the Week awards, scored at least 20 points in four games and reached double figures in 12 games.
 
Lawson scored a career-high 27 points with five 3-pointers to go with a career-high 12 rebounds for her first-ever double-double against Morgan State. In her two seasons at Coppin, Lawson ranks sixth in CSU history in 3-point field goals (84) and free throw percentage (72.4%).
 
Salley received Third Team All-MEAC and All-Defensive Team honors last season after averaging 9.3 points per game while ranking fourth in the MEAC in rebounds (8.8) and seventh in blocks (18).  A native of Reynoldsburg, Ohio, Salley led the conference with 4.1 offensive rebounds per game which ranked 18th nationally.  In MEAC games, Salley averaged 10.0 points and 9.6 rebounds with a pair of double-doubles.
 
In her three seasons with the Eagles, Salley has recorded 82 blocked shots which ranks eighth in CSU history.
 
Connections
Coppin's freshman Nadjy Tyler is headed home. She is the lone Eagle from the city and is excited to open the season in her hometown.
 
Eagle Returners
Returning from last season is Alexandria Hamilton, Aliyah Lawson, Hope Evans, Nailah Delinois, and Jalynda Salley.
 
New to the Nest
The Eagles welcomed in 10 student-athletes this season including: Mossi Staples, Nadjy Tyler, Jewel Watkins, Jaia Alexander, Colleen Bucknor, Khya Jenkins and Cortney Gardner.
 
Scouting La Salle
The Explorers had senior Kayla Spruill and junior Claire Jacobs named to the Atlantic 10 Preseason All-Conference Second Team and Third Team, respectively. The Explorers were picked to finish eighth in the leagues preseason coaches poll.
 
Spruill helped to anchor the Explorers attack last year leading the team in field goal percentage at 50% shooting 110-220 from the field to rank third overall in the conference.
 
Jacobs finished the 2020-21 season second in the A-10 in field goals attempts, field goals made and free throw attempts.

The Eagles are back in action Thursday, November 11 hosting Colonial Athletic Conference (CAA) opponent William & Mary inside the PEC Arena. Tip-off is scheduled for 7 pm.
